Life relies on soil, but the life in our soil isn't what it used to be. Soil bacteria produce Vitamin B12 — which is essential for humans in order to protect neural health and reduce inflammation. But modern agriculture and other human behaviors decimate these bacterial colonies that produce B12. On top of that, in our super-sanitized world, we thoroughly wash food, which further reduces the chances of ingesting a sufficient amount of B12 through natural sources.
Vitamin B12 deficiency is common among people following a plant-based diet. In a review including 13 studies with vegan participants, 10 studies reported at least 20% of vegan participants were B12 deficient. Vitamin B12 is required for proper red blood cell formation, neurological function, and DNA synthesis, and for avoiding pernicious anemia.
