Life relies on soil, but the life in our soil isn't what it used to be. Soil bacteria produce Vitamin B12 — which is essential for humans in order to protect neural health and reduce inflammation. But modern agriculture and other human behaviors decimate these bacterial colonies that produce B12. On top of that, in our super-sanitized world, we thoroughly wash food, which further reduces the chances of ingesting a sufficient amount of B12 through natural sources.
Vitamin B12 deficiency is common among people following a plant-based diet. In a review including 13 studies with vegan participants, 10 studies reported at least 20% of vegan participants were B12 deficient. What other ingredients are in Complement?
In addition to the D3, B12, and DHA/EPA, there is Deionized Water, Natural Citrus Flavor, Non-GMO Sunflower Lecithin, and Vitamin E (a natural preservative). Oh, and there's pure love! There is absolutely no coconut, palm, or MCT oil. No carrageenan and nothing artificial.
Who actually produces Complement™?
We have partnered with Health Specialties Manufacturing (HSM), a subsidiary of The GHT Companies, to manufacture Complement™. We have toured every inch of HSM’s facility, which is cGMP certified, Health Canada-licensed, and FDA-registered. One of the most important factors in our choice of HSM is their quality-assurance capabilities, which covers every step of the manufacturing process, from vetting sources of raw ingredients to testing the finished goods. I'd prefer to take pills. Do you offer Complement™ in pill form?
We formulated Complement as a liquid spray because that’s the purest way to offer these nutrients. Most people don’t realize that capsules are full of preservatives, fillers, and excipients — many of which are unavoidable byproducts of creating a pill. But, by creating a liquid, we are able to include only the purest ingredients, and none of the extra stuff... not to mention allowing vegans to fortify their own foods by adding the spray to a smoothie, salad, or anything else! All of that said, we understand that some people prefer pills, and for that reason we plan to produce a capsule or gel cap form of Complement™ in the near future.
Can I spray directly into my mouth? Can I spray it onto my food?
Complement™ has a pleasant citrus taste and can be sprayed into your mouth. You can also fortify your own food by adding Complement™ to a smoothie, salad, or power bowl! To preserve the high quality ingredients and potency of the nutrients, it is best to spray Complement™ on to cold or warm foods (not hot) and enjoy within 20 minutes. Can I take Complement™ together with my multivitamin or other supplements?

Why doesn't Complement™ include iodine or zinc?
The philosophy behind Complement™ is simple: to provide all of the nutrients that aren’t found in a reasonably diverse plant-based diet. That’s why we call it a “complement” — it’s not about adding more of the nutrients that are already found in plants (that would be a supplement!), it’s about filling the gaps that might exist. That’s why we excluded zinc and iodine from the Complement™ formulation. It might be harder to source those nutrients through whole foods than to get them in a supplement, but it’s nonetheless very possible, and we always want to encourage folks to consume nutrients in whole food form!
The good news is that it is not too difficult to meet the RDA of 150 mcg of iodine on a plant-based diet. For example, one medium potato contains about 60 mcg of iodine, and 4 ounces of cranberries contain 400 mcg of iodine. One of the easiest ways of getting iodine in your diet is by adding a small amount of iodized salt to your food, though this will also add sodium. You might also consider sprinkling kelp flakes on your salads and power bowls to up your iodine intake.
Zinc is available from a wide range of plant-foods, including legumes, tempeh, and tofu, along with many nuts, seeds, and grains. It can also be derived from a variety of fortified products, like plant-based milks, many cereals and even certain meat-substitutes. And there are ways to maximize absorption — like soaking and sprouting beans and grains and roasting nuts; this reduces the level of phytates, which are “blocking agents” inhibiting your ability to absorb zinc. If you’re concerned about getting enough zinc, make sure you are eating zinc-rich plant foods each day, and take steps, like soaking and sprouting, to reduce phytates when preparing foods at home.
